Our ref: SHS/LS/3892/01 Your ref: 16 Nov 2001 Dear Ms Mallory SUSANNAH OSBISTON Thank you for your e-mail of 12 October concerning Susannah Osbiston who was admitted to St Ebba's Hospital. The Ewell Epileptic Colony, later known as St Ebba's Hospital, was opened on 1 July 1903 by the London County Council. In 1962 the South West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board changed the use of St Ebba's Hospital from a psychiatric hospital to a hospital for mentally subnormal patients. In April 1990 responsibility for St Ebba's was transferred to Mid Surrey Health Authority. In 1991 Mid-Surrey Health Authority's Mental Handicap Services Unit applied to become an NHS Trust and this was granted in April 1995 with the creation of Surrey Heartlands NHS Trust. A search has been made in the death register, reference no. 6292/22/22, which gave the following details; Name Susannah Obseston Date of death 22 August 1938 Age 74 Date of admission 7 June 1927 General reference no. 147 The admission register, reference no. 6292/22/2, and medical registers, 6292/22/21, also mention that she was a housewife who lived at Islington. We also hold civil registers for the hospital, reference no. 6292/22/24, and a register of enquiries about patients, reference no. 6292/22/64, should give you additional information about her. Unfortunately due the sensitive nature of the hospital there is a 100 years closure period on these records, so I cannot release any further information to you.
